Minnesota United’s ownership wanted a stadium that would elevate the team to Division I status. In response, the city of Saint Paul, offered a brown-field bus barn site in a transit-friendly neighborhood and challenged the project team to design a stadium that would be a catalyst for the community, reflect its regional context and garner international attention.
In response, Allianz Field’s exterior is made up of 1,700 LED lights allowing for an infinite variety of color schemes to shine through the translucent skin. The mesmerizing exterior is reminiscent of water frozen in motion, alluding to the numerous lakes that dot the region and Minnesota’s northern lights.
The new 19,400 seat stadium consistently sells out to an average of almost 20,000 fans per game by virtue of standing-room areas. Per-capita concession sales have quadrupled, and the once-neglected Minnesota neighborhood is coming to life, showcasing the growing interest of American soccer fans.
